What Makes a Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation Surgery?

Deciding to undergo breast augmentation is a very personal decision, which should be based on your own desire to improve the size of your breasts. Breast augmentation surgery is often viewed as a great way to change your look, and boost your self-esteem. But it may not be right for you, so what makes a good candidate for breast augmentation surgery?

Breast augmentation surgery is a procedure that is done to increase the size of the breasts. It is typically done with the use of breast implants that are filled with either silicone gel (silicone implants), or sterile salt water (saline implants). Breast implants are available in different shapes, sizes, and textures.

At Correa Plastic Surgery, located in The Woodlands, TX, Dr. Bryan Correa also performs breast augmentation via autologous fat transfer. This involves the use of your own fat, which is usually harvested via liposuction. However, this procedure is generally reserved for breast reconstruction cases.

Breast augmentation remains one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries in the US. While many women dream of having larger breasts, they may not be a good candidate for the procedure. Breast augmentation will enhance the appearance of your breasts, but it should never be seen as the answer to all your relationship problems, or issues of self-confidence.

A Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation Surgery Should:

1.) Be in Good Overall Health

This is perhaps the most important consideration, as you should not undergo this type of surgery if you have a pre-existing illness. Candidates should also get the required breast checks, (including a mammogram), so as to ensure that they do not have a breast condition that can lead to complications after surgery.

2.) Have Realistic Expectations About Surgery

It is important to discuss your expectations with your plastic surgeon ahead of time, so that he/she can confirm that the results you desire are achievable. Some women take along a photo to their consultation, in order to give the surgeon an idea of what they would like their breasts to look like.

Although having a photo is very useful, clients should be aware that while the surgeon may realize outcomes that are close to the ideal, the results will not be exactly the same. There are also instances in which a breast lift may have to be done alongside breast augmentation, in order to achieve the desired results.

3.) Ensure You’re Not Allergic to the Materials Being Used for Surgery

Clients should advise their surgeon of any prior history of an allergic reaction to any specific substances or medications.

4.) Should be Well-Informed About the Procedure

Women contemplating breast augmentation should take the time to find out what types of breast implants are available, where the implants will be placed, where the incisions will be made, and how bad the scars are likely to be. You should also ask your surgeon about the duration of the recovery period, so you can estimate how much time you will need to take from work. Also, be sure to ask your surgeon how long the implants are expected to last, and if you are likely to need another surgery.

5.) Know What the Risks Are

Regardless of how good your plastic surgeon is, the reality is that there are risks associated with all types of surgery, and you need to know what these are. Do some research before you go to see your plastic surgeon about the procedure, and ask about possible complications such as capsular contracture, loss of nipple sensation, as well as the possibility that you may be unable to breastfeed in the future.

6.) Have Fully Developed Breasts

Young women should wait until they are at least 18 years of age, before considering breast augmentation. By that time their breasts should be fully developed and stable.
