What are the Benefits of a ‘Nose Job’ (aka Rhinoplasty)?

What is Rhinoplasty?

A rhinoplasty or nose job is a surgical procedure that is done to alter the internal and external structures of the nose. The procedure is often requested for cosmetic reasons, by people who wish to change how their nose looks. Rhinoplasty is also performed for functional reasons, to correct a problem with the structure of the nose.

About the Procedure

Rhinoplasty can be done using an open or closed technique. With the closed technique, all the incisions are made inside the nose, so there are no visible scars. With the open technique one additional incision is made on the columella, which is the soft tissue between the nostrils.

The procedure may involve the removal of nose cartilage, in order to reduce a nasal hump or bump. Alternatively, it may involve augmenting the nose to improve the shape. Reshaping or refining the tip is also an option. The changes made during cosmetic rhinoplasty really depend on the aesthetic requirements of the patient.

The Benefits of a “Nose Job” (aka Rhinoplasty)

If you don’t like the way your nose looks, and would like to change its appearance and improve your profile, rhinoplasty may be the right procedure for you.

Rhinoplasty has become hugely popular in the US in recent years. Rhinoplasty is one of those cosmetic procedures that is in high demand by both men and women.

More men are turning to rhinoplasty because they want to achieve a more masculine profile, and boost self-esteem. Women that are unhappy with the shape or size of their nose often struggle with insecurities, and they see rhinoplasty as one way to boost their self-image.

1. Rhinoplasty enhances facial symmetry

Rhinoplasty is one of the plastic surgery procedures that can improve facial symmetry. Facial symmetry refers to the balance of your facial features, and is thought to impact attractiveness. People with features that are more symmetrical are often considered more attractive.

Since the nose is in the middle of the face, it can negatively affect your appearance if it is too large or too small. Some people suffer insecurities because of these issues, and opt to undergo rhinoplasty to address them.

Redefining the nose can improve facial features, and transform your appearance. However, patients should have realistic expectations about nose surgery, and not expect that their face will be perfectly symmetrical after the procedure.

2. Rhinoplasty can improve air flow

People experiencing breathing difficulties can gain significant relief by getting a functional nose job. This type of rhinoplasty is done to fix problems with the structures of the nose that limit airflow that affects normal breathing, or cause snoring. These problems are often due to birth defects, but may also be the result of trauma to the nose, which can lead to a deviated septum.

Functional rhinoplasty is done to clear airway obstruction, or to treat the internal nasal passages. Individuals suffering with nasal congestion that forces them to breathe mostly through their mouth, can benefit from surgery to remove airway obstruction.

3. Rhinoplasty can redefine your nose

If your nose is crooked or if you have a hump or bump that you’d like to get rid of, rhinoplasty can reshape and redefine your nose for you. It can also better define the bridge of the nose. A nose job can lead to subtle or dramatic improvements in the appearance of your nose.

If you feel self-conscious about how your nose looks, rhinoplasty can reshape and refine it, and boost your self-confidence.

Before making a decision to embark on any type of plastic surgery, you should consult with a board certified plastic surgeon. During your initial consultation be sure to take the time to learn about the procedure, so that you are aware not only of the benefits, but the possible risks and complications that can occur.
