Guide to Thermage® Wrinkle Treatments for Anti-Aging

Thermage wrinkle treatments utilize a “unique radiofrequency treatment that can help improve the appearance of sagging or loose skin, giving you a smoother, sleeker and younger look and feel.” In this post, Board Certified Dermatologist Dr. Eugene J. Nowak explains everything you need to know about this non-surgical cosmetic procedure.

Guide to Thermage® Wrinkle Treatments by Dr. Eugene Nowak

Thanks to amazing advances in skin tightening technology, there are now cosmetic treatments like Thermage that make it possible to get, smoother, tighter skin, without a nip or tuck. If you’re concerned about loose skin on the face or body, Thermage may be the right solution for you.

But how does Thermage work, and what type of results can you expect?

What is Thermage®?

Thermage is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure that uses radiofrequency energy to smooth and contour the skin on the face, and body. Thermage softens fine lines and wrinkles, and also lifts and firms the skin. The procedure is safe for all skin types, and is very suitable for treating early signs of aging.

Treatment time varies depending on the part of the body being treated. The face normally takes about 30 minutes, while other parts of the body may require up to 90 minutes. It typically takes only one session with Thermage to achieve optimal results.

Why Thermage®?

Loss of skin tone is almost an inescapable result of aging skin, and the accompanying wrinkles, loose skin, and fine lines can make you look and feel a lot older than you are.

Thermage by Solta Medical is an effective, non-invasive way to tackle age-related changes that take place in the skin. Solta Medical is a global leader in the manufacture of energy-based aesthetic devices.

How Thermage® Works to Help Aging Skin

Younger skin has high levels of natural collagen that keeps it tight and supple, but collagen starts to break down during the 30’s, and this decline results in wrinkles and sagging skin.

The radiofrequency energy released during Thermage treatment penetrates the underlying dermal layer of the skin, and heats the connective tissue that provides structural support for the skin.

The heat triggers the skin’s natural renewal process. It remodels existing collagen, and spurs the growth of new collagen and elastin fibers, resulting in further tightening of the skin as time goes on.

Where Can It Be Used?

Thermage can be used on the face to reduce wrinkles, and to firm areas like the jawline and neck. It can also contour various parts of the body, including the buttocks, thighs, arms, and abdomen. Thermage can even be used to reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Thermage is especially suitable for firming the delicate skin around the eyes. It rejuvenates the eyes by tightening loose eyelid skin, and eliminating wrinkles and hooding.

The Thermage® Difference

Unlike other treatments that only affect the outer layer (epidermis) of the skin, Thermage is able to penetrate to the deeper layers and rebuild collagen. Its unique ability to tighten collagen in all three layers of the skin, makes Thermage a very effective skin rejuvenation solution.

Thermage is also the only system of its kind that uses revolutionary monopolar capacitive radiofrequency technology (CRF). CRF is able to uniformly heat the deep tissue.

CRF is a component of its ThermaCool feature, which is a continuous cooling system that cools both the superficial and deep layers of the skin. Thermage treatments are generally very comfortable, because while it heats the deep tissue, it simultaneously protects the skin’s surface layer.

What Can You Expect?

Thermage produces subtle, natural looking results that can be seen after just one treatment. Most patients notice visible tightening of the skin immediately after the procedure. Improvement will continue to be seen for up to 6 months post-treatment.

Thermage can produce the following results:

  • Tighter, more contoured skin
  • Brighter complexion
  • Reduced skin laxity in the jawline and neck
  • Softening of wrinkles around the eyes
  • Improvement in nasolabial folds

There is no doubt that Thermage works, but clients considering the procedure should have realistic expectations. Thermage works best for people experiencing early signs of aging. In addition, it is meant to correct minimal skin laxity, and is therefore not recommended for individuals with a lot of loose skin.

Thermage is a safe procedure, but it must be performed by a skilled and experienced practitioner, in order to achieve the optimal results. During consultation clients should also be sure to ask about possible side-effects.
