What Makes Someone a Good Candidate for a Tummy Tuck?

The tummy is one of those parts of the body that many women (and men) struggle to get toned and sculpted.  Individuals that are dissatisfied with the appearance of their tummy often choose to get a tummy tuck in order to achieve a sleeker silhouette.

What is a tummy tuck?

If you feel self-conscious and insecure about the sagging skin on your abdomen, tummy tuck surgery can improve its appearance and restore your self-confidence.
A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a procedure that is designed to refine the abdomen — it reduces excess skin and fat and tightens the muscles of the abdominal wall. The procedure tones the midsection, making it leaner and more attractive.

About the procedure

Tummy tuck surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia, but local anesthesia with IV sedation is also an alternative. Depending on the amount of excess skin in the upper and lower abdomen, a standard tummy tuck or mini tummy tuck may be required.

The incision for tummy tuck surgery is typically made just above the pubic area, and extends from hip to hip. When the incision is made low in the pubic area it can be easily concealed by your underwear or bathing suit.

During the procedure, the surgeon will trim away any excess skin and fat, and tighten the abdominal muscles.

Recovering from a tummy tuck

There is generally some swelling and bruising after abdominoplasty, and patients are required to wear a compression garment to help minimize swelling. It can take up to 6 months to see the final results.

Depending on the extent of the procedure, tummy tuck surgery may require considerable healing time. It’s therefore important to follow the post-operative advice of your surgeon in order to ensure optimal healing, and achieve the best possible results.

What makes someone a good candidate for a tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck can significantly improve the appearance of the abdominal region, but it’s not the right choice for everyone. However, individuals that are good candidates for the procedure will get the best outcome and have fewer complications.

You may be a good tummy tuck candidate if...

  •   You’ve undergone radical weight loss, such as a bariatric procedure
  •   You’re in relatively good shape
  •   You have an abdominal bulge due to loose tissue and/or poor muscle tone
  •   Excess skin around your abdomen is causing you to feel self-conscious
  •   You’re a woman who is finished having children
  •   You’re done breastfeeding
  •   You’re at least six months removed from pregnancy

Ideal candidates for tummy tuck surgery are individuals with an abdominal bulge that is caused by loose tissue and/or poor muscle tone. Poor muscle tone causes the belly to protrude (common in women after pregnancy). The abdominal muscles often separate during pregnancy, because of the pressure that’s put on the belly.

A tummy tuck will eliminate the loose skin around the belly, and contour the abdominal region, so men and women that have undergone radical weight loss — specifically those who’ve been left with a lot of sagging abdominal skin — are generally good tummy tuck candidates. Additionally, candidates should already be at their goal weight, and in the best possible condition for surgery.

That said, a tummy tuck is not meant to address the problem of excess fat in the abdominal region, as this issue is best treated with liposuction (other alternatives to tummy tuck surgery include procedures like Body jet lipo, or water-assisted body sculpting, and ThermaLipo).

Pregnancy and the accompanying weight fluctuations can leave some women with a stubborn pooch that they can’t get rid of no matter how hard they try. As a result, they often end up with excess skin on the waist, and this makes them a good candidate for a tummy tuck.  A tummy tuck will also get rid of any stretch marks above the belly button.

Women considering tummy tuck surgery after pregnancy should be in relatively good shape, and be done having children. They should also be finished breastfeeding. A tummy tuck is often included as part of a mommy makeover surgery, which is a combination of procedures designed to reverse some of the physical changes brought on by pregnancy. Women should wait at least 6 months after pregnancy before considering tummy tuck surgery.

If you feel self-conscious and insecure about the sagging skin on your abdomen, tummy tuck surgery can improve its appearance and restore your self-confidence.

The best way to find out if you’re a good candidate for tummy tuck surgery, it’s advisable to consult with a board certified plastic surgeon for a comprehensive evaluation. Your surgeon will recommend a customized treatment plan for your tummy tuck that’s based on your unique needs as an individual.
