What Exactly is a “Mommy Makeover” Procedure?

Weight gain, droopy breasts, and a sagging tummy, are some of the changes women struggle with after pregnancy. While some seem to be able to get back in shape easily, the reality is far different for many others. They have a difficult time reversing those body changes through diet and exercise, and since exercise is not effective on certain parts of the body, it often takes a mommy makeover to get them looking gorgeous again!

What is a Mommy Makeover?

A mommy makeover is a group of surgical procedures that a woman undergoes in an effort to restore her pre-baby figure. Pregnancy and breast feeding cause a lot of physical changes to a woman’s body, particularly to the breasts and abdomen. It’s therefore not surprising that these are the areas generally targeted by the procedures included in a mommy makeover.

The mommy makeover procedures can be done at the same time or separately. However, it’s usually more economical to do them together, which offers the added benefit of only having one recovery period to deal with.

Why You May Need or Want a Mommy Makeover

If you are unhappy with your body changes post pregnancy, and would like to get back in shape, a mommy makeover may be just what you need. It can restore your self-confidence, and leave you feeling refreshed and restored.

The Anatomy of a Mommy Makeover Procedure

A mommy makeover typically focuses on procedures for the breasts and abdomen. The breasts tend to lose shape and volume, and become droopy. The abdomen also sags, and there is some stretched skin and extra fat. A mommy makeover is designed to fix these issues.

The core procedures of a mommy makeover are…

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation addresses loss of volume in the breasts. It increases the size and fullness of the breasts. This is typically achieved with the use of breast implants that are filled with either silicone gel, or sterile salt water. The breast augmentation will make the breasts fuller.

Breast Lift

A breast lift addresses the sagging of the breasts. It restores the breasts to a higher position on the chest wall, creating a more aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck is done to eliminate loose skin, excess fats, and also to tighten separated tummy muscles. It also improves stretch marks. A tummy tuck will therefore tone and firm the abdomen.

Liposuction

Liposuction addresses pockets of stubborn fat in areas such as the thighs, arms, and buttocks.
Other procedures may be included in a mommy makeover if required; it all depends on your specific needs.

What Patients Can Expect

Depending on the combination of procedures being done, a mommy makeover can take anywhere from 3-5 hours.

Recovery Period

The recovery from a mommy makeover can take 4-6 weeks. For the first 2 weeks you will definitely need to take time off from work, and get help with the kids and household chores.

You can expect that there will be some bruising and swelling, but this generally subsides within 2-3 weeks. Most women are able to return to work after 2 weeks, but if your job is very strenuous, you may need to take up to 4 weeks off.

The Initial Consultation

During your initial consultation your plastic surgeon will listen to your goals, in order to find out what you want to achieve by undergoing a mommy makeover. The surgeon will also perform a thorough examination and evaluation, to ensure that a mommy makeover would be right for you.

You will also learn about the various procedures, so that you can make an informed decision about surgery. It’s a good idea to do some research ahead of time, and take along a list of questions that you would like your surgeon to answer.

A mommy makeover is a customized procedure, because each woman has different areas of concerns. So you and your surgeon will decide which procedures are best for you.
