Common Questions About NightLase® Treatment for Sleep Apnea

There are millions of people all across the world whose incessant snoring prevents them from getting a good night’s sleep. If snoring is a problem for you, there is a new laser treatment called NightLase that can help! Fotona’s NightLase® therapy is a non-invasive, patient-friendly laser treatment for increasing the quality of a patient’s sleep.

What causes snoring, anyway?

Snoring is a very common problem that can affect individuals of any age, and it may be caused by a variety of factors. Snoring is an indication that something is preventing the free flow of air through the nose and mouth while you sleep.  The obstruction is normally in the upper airway, and may be caused by the soft palate, or excess flappy tissue in the throat.

The narrowing in the throat causes the nearby tissues to vibrate, resulting in the rattling sound which is referred to as snoring.  Other causes of snoring include nasal problems such as enlarged or blocked turbinates, sleep posture (specifically sleeping on the back), and medications.

Can snoring affect your health?

Snoring is not entirely harmless, as it can lead to serious health issues, not to mention the difficulties that can arise in the relationship with your spouse who sleeps next to you at night.

Not getting a good night’s sleep can reduce focus, concentration, and alertness. Extreme cases of snoring may indicate the presence of sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a dangerous condition in which the walls of the throat narrow during sleep, leading to the interruption of normal breathing. People with the condition are at risk of developing serious health issues such as high blood, diabetes, and heart disease.

What is NightLase?

NightLase by Fontana is a non-surgical laser treatment for snoring and sleep apnea. It is a 20 minute procedure that treats snoring by strengthening the collagen tissues in the soft palate. NightLase requires no anesthesia, and provides immediate results. It typically requires a series of 3 treatments with NightLase, done over a period of 3 weeks, to achieve long lasting relief from snoring. However, most patients notice a reduction in snoring after the first treatment.

How does it work?

NightLase uses a powerful long pulsed Er: YAG laser to treat snoring. The heat from the laser prompts the contraction of the collagen in the oral mucosa tissue, and also strengthens the tissue. The tightening of the throat tissues helps to open up the airway at the back of the throat.

The laser energy is also able to shrink the soft palate. In cases where snoring is the result of a floppy soft palate, the treatment will reduce the vibration of the palate, and therefore minimize snoring.

NightLase is a safe, patient-friendly solution for snoring. Most patients that have undergone the procedure notice an immediate reduction in snoring, and consequent improvement in their sleep patterns.

Is it painful?

NightLase is a comfortable, gentle treatment that is not considered painful. Most patients only experience a mild warm sensation during the procedure.

What is the recovery time?

What makes NightLase such a notable treatment for snoring is the fact that unlike surgery there is no downtime. So you can literally walk in the office and have the procedure done, and return to your normal routine immediately.

Are there any side-effects?

There are usually no side-effects associated with NightLase treatment. On some occasions patients may have a minor sore throat, but this generally resolves within a few days.

Are you a good candidate?

If snoring is negatively impacting your sleep or putting you at risk of sleep apnea, you may be a good candidate for NightLase.

Are you tired of having your sleep interrupted at night because of snoring? If you are, NightLase treatment can help you get the restful sleep you desire, so that you wake up feeling refreshed.
