What is a Gastroenterologist ?

Gastroenterologists are specialized internists with subspecialty training in conditions of the gastroeintestinal system. This includes all of the organs and structures involved in eating and digesting food, from the mouth to the anus.

Gastroenterologists are trained to treat a wide range of diseases and disorders of the GI tract, such as heartburn, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), gallstones, constipation, diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and gastrointestinal cancers, among other disorders. To diagnose patients with a GI condition, gastroenterologists may utilize a variety of techniques and procedures, including colonoscopy, biopsy, esophageal dilation and endoscopy, among other diagnostic procedures.
