About Dr. Gibson
Dr. Gibson

Bio

Dr. Val Gibson was born in New Eagle, Pennsylvania and soon after moved to West Virginia.  When he started school, he soared academically and athletically.  He discovered basketball as a young boy and continued playing throughout high school where he earned all-conference and all-state honorable mention accolades.

As an undergraduate, Dr. Gibson graduated Magna Cum Laude from West Virginia University with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. He then graduated from the West Virginia University School of Medicine where he was elected to the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society.  Dr. Gibson completed a rigorous residency in Anesthesiology at the University of Texas at Houston Medical School where he was elected Chief Resident during his final year.

After joining Metro Anesthesia in 2007, Dr. Gibson served on Metro’s Compliance Committee, Credentials Committee, Peer Review Committee, and Political Action Committee.  He cares for patients at many facilities across DFW including Baylor Surgical Hospital Las Colinas, Medical City Arlington, Medical City Lewisville, and Trinity Park Surgery Center.  He currently serves as the Chief of Anesthesia at Medical City Arlington where he is also the Chief of Staff Elect.

In addition to being Board Certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology, Dr. Gibson has authored several publications and is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, International Society of Research and Anesthesiology, and the Texas Society of Anesthesiology.  He specializes in regional anesthesia where he utilizes various nerve block techniques to minimize post-operative pain and reduce narcotic utilization for his patients.  He also specializes in obstetrical anesthesia.

Throughout his career, Dr. Gibson has spoken to a wide variety of audiences – from nursing students and interns on how to function and adapt in the OR to elementary and middle school students on how to integrate the science they are learning into real world medical applications.  Dr. Gibson enjoys working with young people so they can see “there are people who look like them, that care about them, and have succeeded at high levels through hard work.”

Because of his expertise with nerve blocks and narcotic sparing techniques, Dr. Gibson speaks nationally and holds workshops for doctors, nurses, and other patient caregivers.  He teaches them how to incorporate these techniques into their analgesic regimens so they can optimize pain control for patients while minimizing narcotic usage.  This ultimately leads to better outcomes for both the patient and the hospital.  Dr. Gibson shared, “Coming from West Virginia, I have seen the devastation that opioid abuse has had on our society.  Having an opportunity to educate and instruct other physicians and health care providers on how they can minimize and sometimes eliminate opioids post surgically is awesome.  It represents an opportunity to help others avoid the pitfalls that can be associated with opioids and also emphasizes prolonged comfort and pain control for our patients.”

Dr. Gibson is passionate about his Christian faith, his wife, his three children and working out.  He also loves making people laugh which they did when his family was on the Family Feud TV game show.  He truly enjoys his work as an anesthesiologist and can’t imagine doing anything else.  “If I wasn’t an anesthesiologist, I would be following one around, asking how I could become one,” he said.  “I love thinking through things as an integrated system, and the cause and effect nature of pharmacology and anatomy and physiology.  In addition, I also like performing procedures and using my hands.  Therefore, anesthesiology was a match made in heaven for me.”
