Srinivas S. Iyengar, MD FACS, Ophthalmic Plastic Surgeon
A San Diego native, Dr. Iyengar graduated from the University of Colorado School of Medicine at the top of his class and served as class president. He did his surgical internship at Exempla St. Joseph Hospital in Denver, Colorado. He completed his ophthalmic residency at the University of Kansas, where he was recognized for the highest in-training exam scores and selected by the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology as a Paul Kayser International Scholar. He then spent one year helping teach surgery around the globe on a DC-10 airplane as part of the Flying Eye Hospital with ORBIS International, a non-profit organization based in New York and focused on reducing preventable blindness.
Dr. Iyengar then completed his ASOPRS-sponsored fellowship training in oculofacial plastic surgery in Los Angeles. After 3 years as one of the only oculoplastic surgeons in Central Florida, and serving as the Chief of Ophthalmology at Lakeland Regional Medical Center, he returned home to San Diego's North County, to start San Diego Eyelid Specialists in Encinitas.
Dr. Iyengar is a diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO) as well as a member of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery(ASOPRS). He is also a member of the San Diego County Medical Society.
He has a particular interest in international medicine and complements his San Diego practice with volunteer surgery around the globe from Honduras to Cambodia. He serves as a voluntary faculty member at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), and as the attending surgeon at the free eye clinic in downtown San Diego where he oversees residents and medical students. In 2016, Dr. Iyengar was nominated as Volunteer Faculty Member of the Year, and in 2017, he received the Outstanding Volunteer Faculty Award.
He is a member of Scripps Mercy Physician Partners and provides consulting support for complicated eyelid injuries at Scripps Encinitas Hospital, Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, and Tri-City Medical Center. He has also served as part of the medical staff for professional sports teams including the San Diego Chargers and the Detroit Tigers.
Plastic surgeons perform a wide variety of surgeries that can restore or correct the form and function of the human body, which can be either cosmetic or reconstructive in nature. Dr. Iyengar is able to correct abnormalities of the body that may be causing adverse health effects, or perform surgeries to correct malformations caused by birth defects, trauma, tumors or disease. He also performs elective surgeries, which patients undergo to improve the aesthetic appearance of a certain body part.
As an ophthalmologist in CA, Dr. Srinivas Iyengar is trained to diagnose, treat, and manage diseases or trauma of the eye. Dr. Iyengar may treat conditions such as glaucoma, corneal tumors, cataracts, retinal disorders, conjunctivitis, astigmatism and ocular tumors.
