Dr. Randal Betz is a nationally recognized surgeon with over 30 years of experience in caring for children and adults with problems of the spine including scoliosis, kyphosis, spondylolisthesis, fused vertebrae, neuromuscular scoliosis, and other spine-related conditions. Initially, Dr. Betz began his career caring for both children and adults but for the past 15 years has been entirely dedicated to the treatment of children and adolescents with pediatric spine problems. His particular expertise and passion is developing and offering the newest treatment options that are not only more effective but also more acceptable to patients and their families. These include novel options for non-surgical management, fusionless corrections such as vertebral body stapling (VBS) and vertebral body tethering (VBT), and instrumentation techniques for spinal fusion.
In addition to his expertise in management of spine disorders, Dr. Betz is internationally recognized for his expertise in pediatric spinal cord injury (SCI). Over the last 20 years, he has advanced medical and rehabilitation approaches for children with SCI, particularly in the areas of neuromuscular scoliosis, hip subluxation and dislocation, upper extremity tendon transfers, and functional electrical stimulation for restoring upper and lower extremity function as well as bowel and bladder. In addition to the clinical care of children with SCI, Dr. Betz has been one of few researchers who have pioneered new treatments to improve function and prevent complications in these children.
Previously, Dr. Betz was Chief of Staff and Medical Director of the Spinal Cord Injury Program at Shriners Hospitals for Children, Philadelphia. He is Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Temple University School of Medicine. Dr. Betz earned a medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine, completed an internship in general surgery and residency in orthopaedic surgery at Temple University Hospital and Shriners Hospital for Children, and undertook a fellowship in pediatric orthopaedics at the Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Delaware. Dr. Betz received several distinguished postdoctoral fellowships including the ABC Traveling Fellowship, the North American Traveling Fellowship, and the Berg-Sloat Traveling Fellowship. In 2013, Dr. Betz served as the senior mentor for the Scoliosis Research Society Traveling Fellowship.
Dr. Betz has 10 United States patents for new methods and treatments for scoliosis; is author of over 290 peer-reviewed articles and 45 chapters in medical textbooks; has presented over 900 presentations, invited lectures and distinguished lectureships world-wide; and is co-editor of four medical textbooks on spine surgery and one medical textbook on pediatric spinal cord injury. Dr. Betz is an active member of the Scoliosis Research Society (for which he served as President in 2005), the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Paraplegia Society, American Spinal Injury Association, and the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America. He is recipient of the A. Estin Comarr Memorial Award for Clinical Service from the American Paraplegia Society and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Spinal Injury Association.
Dr. Betz has moved his practice to Lawrenceville, New Jersey to join to Dr. Darryl Antonacci. In his new location, Dr. Betz will continue his clinical practice and research in offering and advancing effective treatment options for infants, children, and adolescents with spine problems and spinal cord injury.
Being an orthopedic surgeon in New York, Dr. Betz is trained to treat and identify all forms of injury to your musculoskeletal system, including the bones, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and joints. After making a diagnosis, Dr. Betz will often resort to surgery when all the other treatment options have already been exhausted or ruled out. Patients might need the attention of an orthopedic surgeon for torn ligaments, sports injuries, fractures, sprains, and more.
Specializing in orthopedic spine surgery, Dr. Betz can diagnose and treat a range of conditions affecting the spine. These may include degenerative diseases, arthritic conditions, fractures, tumors, deformities such as scoliosis, and other conditions. Treatment techniques may range from invasive to minimally-invasive surgeries of the spine and vertebrae. However, depending upon the patient's diagnosis and medical history, treatments may be non-surgical in nature.
