Dr. Peter Spence McKay has been a partner at Norwich Ophthalmology Group for eight years. He grew up in Middletown Connecticut. He is a graduate of Fairfield University, Fairfield, Connecticut where he was a Chemistry major. He went on to study medicine in the United Kingdom at The Queens University of Belfast School of Medicine in Belfast Northern Ireland. He graduated in the top ten percent of his class in medical school. He completed his internship at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast and then attended Brown University’s transition year as a Resident in General Surgery in Providence RI.
Dr McKay then decided he wanted a career in Ophthalmology and returned to Belfast where he was accepted into the Royal Victoria Hospitals Program in Ophthalmology. He worked in the British National Health service Surgical Training program in Ophthalmology for four years when he passed the British Board equivalent in Ophthalmology known as the Fellowship of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. He continued working in Belfast for two more years when he decided to return to the United States. Working in Belfast, under the British National Health Service, Dr McKay gained extensive training in all fields of Ophthalmology, especially anterior segment surgery which included cornea and refractive surgery, cataract, glaucoma, oculoplastic, and muscle surgery. To become American Board certified in Ophthalmology it was required that Dr McKay repeat three years of Ophthalmology residency in a United States training program. Therefore he completed three years of Ophthalmology Residency at the Brooklyn Jewish Hospital’s Interfaith residency program in New York City.
In July 2000 he joined the Norwich Ophthalmology Group and passed the American Board of Ophthalmology membership exams in 2001. He has continued to develop his skills in comprehensive ophthalmology with this practice. He is a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the New England Ophthalmological Society.
With the rapidly changing technology in ophthalmic surgery Dr McKay and other members of his group have focused their surgical expertise on refractive surgery including offering patients Premium intraocular lenses in cataract surgery and Laser refractive correction which they can now perform in the new on site Norwich Ophthalmology Refractive Laser suite housing the Top of the line Alcon WaveLight Allegretto Excimer Laser. Dr McKay’s and Norwich Ophthalmology’s goal in the community is only to offer cutting edge broad spectrum ophthalmic services for their patients. Better vision is success.
As an ophthalmologist in CT, Dr. Peter McKay is trained to diagnose, treat, and manage diseases or trauma of the eye. Dr. McKay may treat conditions such as glaucoma, corneal tumors, cataracts, retinal disorders, conjunctivitis, astigmatism and ocular tumors.
