Dr. Karanjia is an assistant professor of neurosciences and medical director of UC San Diego Health System’s Neurocritical Care Program and Neuro-Intensive Care Unit (ICU). She founded the Neuro-ICU, which provides around-the-clock expert care, seven days a week, from physicians and staff specializing in neurocritical care.
Dr. Karanjia’s research interests include early detection of neurologic deterioration and evaluating methods for monitoring cerebral blood flow and intracranial pressure. She has published several book chapters and articles in leading journals, including Neurocritical Care and Archives of Neurology.
Dr. Karanjia completed a fellowship in Neurocritical Care with the Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care Medicine at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. She completed her neurology residency at UC Los Angeles School of Medicine’s Department of Neurology, and her internship training at Stanford University School of Medicine’s Department of Internal Medicine. She is board certified in both neurology and neurocritical care.
Dr. Karanjia earned her medical degree from Stanford University School of Medicine, and graduated magna cum laude as an undergraduate from Harvard University.
Dr. Karanjia is a member of many professional organizations, including the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, the Society of Critical Care Medicine, the Neurocritical Care Society, and the American Academy of Neurology.
Dr. Navaz Karanjia is trained to identify and treat conditions affecting the nervous system, which may stem from problem areas in the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves. Dr. Karanjia may issue scans and tests to arrive at the proper diagnosis, which is paramount when creating a personalized treatment plan. Treatments offered by neurologists may include medication management, multiple therapies, or lifestyle changes, among others.
Critical care specialists like Dr. Karanjia provide life-saving care for patients in critical condition. Patients are usually cared for in within intensive care units (ICUs), and may receive life and organ support.
