Dr. Akl completed four years of residency training in General Obstetrics and Gynecology (2002-2006) at Michigan State University followed by an additional three years (2006-2009) of fellowship training focused on Urogynecology and Pelvic Reconstructive surgery (FPMRS) at the renowned Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, one of the best training institutions in Urogynecology, Pelvic Surgery, Laparoscopic and da Vinci robotic surgery. Dr. Akl established AZ Urogynecology & Pelvic Health Center in 2009.
Dr. Akl is also interested in research and authored numerous publications in the field of urogynecology, pelvic reconstructive surgery. Dr. Akl presented numerous oral presentations in several national society meetings and he is an active member in the American Urogynecology Society and the American association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists.

Urogynecologists are trained to treat women suffering from all types of pelvic disorders, such as incontinence, uterine disorders or sexual dysfunction, among others. Dr. Akl is trained in both surgical and non-surgical treatments for women suffering from these conditions, and can help restore the quality of life in patients. Conditions treated by a urogynecologist will often be extremely personal, or potentially embarrassing, for patients.
