Dr. Hutchinson completed medical school at the University of Illinois followed by a residency in orthopaedic surgery with Michigan State University. After completing a fellowship in Kentucky dedicated to sports medicine, Dr. Hutchinson established practice at the University of Illinois. Dr. Hutchinson is currently Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine at the University where he serves as Head Team Physician for all sports and teaches numerous students, residents and fellows about issues related to sports medicine. Dr. Hutchinson has cared for numerous events and teams over the years including volunteering at the Chicago Marathon, serving as Team Physician for the WNBA Chicago Sky for its first four seasons, as well as USA Basketball, USA Field Hockey, USA Soccer, and USA Track and Field. Dr. Hutchinson has also served as USA team physician for two World University Games and the Torino Paralympic Games.
Clinically Dr. Hutchinson cares for all sorts of musculoskeletal injuries related to sports, overuse, and work-related injuries. He has published broadly and is recognized nationally and internationally regarding knee injuries, leg injuries, shoulder injuries, and elbow injuries.
As an orthopedic surgeon in Illinois, Dr. Hutchinson is trained to detect and treat all forms of damage to the musculoskeletal system, including the tendons, ligaments, joints, bones, and muscles. Once a diagnosis has been achieved, Dr. Hutchinson will typically resort to surgery when other treatment plans have been exhausted or eliminated. Patients may require the attention of an orthopedic surgeon for sports injuries, sprains, torn ligaments, fractures, and more.
Sports medicine physicians are trained to provide treatment and prevention plans for those participating in sports and related physical activities. Dr. Hutchinson is trained to treat complications such as muscle tears and strains, concussions, tendon and ligament damage, shin splints, sports hernias, fractures, and a variety of others. Treatments may include rehabilitation services, therapies and a variety of surgical operations, among others.
