Bio

The practice of Women’s Medical Specialty is dedicated to providing total comprehensive women’s care to women of all ages from adolescence to post-menopausal years. Our board-certified gynecologist – obstetrician, Dr. Larry J Kaufman, who has been practicing in the local community for more than twenty years along with board-certified nurse practitioner, Susan Gominger, specialize in total obstetrical and gynecological care including in-office pregnancy care and cesarean sections, in- office colposcopy and endometrial biopsy, infertility, contraception counseling, gynecologic and laparoscopic surgery, adolescent gynecologic counseling, Gardasil vaccine for the prevention of HPV, immunizations for Influenza, Hepatitis A/B, Tdap, and  testing for sexually transmitted diseases, PMS assessment, and endometrial ablation – an alternative to hysterectomy.

At our conveniently located office in the AtlantiCare Health Park in Egg Harbor Township at the intersection of Route 40 – Black Horse Pike and English Creek Avenue, the practice is proud to offer the following health services and wellness programs:
Breast Care – Includes breast examination by a board-certified gynecologist or nurse practitioner. Breast cancer can occur at any age and the risk of developing breast cancer increases with age.  The good news is, breast cancer may be detected by mammography before any clinical signs or symptoms are apparent and the earlier detected, the better the chance for successful treatment – very important reasons to have an annual breast exam and screening mammogram.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Osteoporosis  – bone loss threatens millions of women and can remain undetected until a bone is broken.  Being past menopause is a major risk factor as well as smoking, too little calcium or vitamin D, thin or petite build, family history of osteoporosis or broken bones. National Osteoporosis foundation guidelines recommend bone-density testing for all women age 65 and over, and all women under age 65 who have one risk factor besides menopause.

ThinPrep Pap Test and HPV Screening – the latest in pap smear medical technology in fifty years, a screening test that has proven very successful in detecting signs of cervical cancer.  This method allows the preservation of almost all sample cells collected, enabling the lab to process a better slide.  Studies involving thousands of women have proven the ThinPrepPap test increased the detection of pre-cancerous cells.

Genetic Testing for Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer – A safe and simple blood test  - BRCAnalysis is specifically for individuals thought to be at high risk of breast or ovarian cancer due to family history or because the developed breast cancer before the age of 50 or ovarian cancer at any age. Knowing your risk of developing breast or ovarian cancer and doing everything you can to lower it could make a big difference for you, for your family, and your future healthcare choices.

Menopause Program – are you bothered by symptoms of hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, vaginal dryness or sleep disturbances?  If so, you may be experiencing signs of menopause.  Menopause can increase a woman’s risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and cancer.  There are numerous treatment options that you can benefit from including biodentical hormones and Menasoy, a specially formulated "natural" product that can be purchased in our office that provides relief from many menopausal symptoms.

In-Office Continence Program - More than 13 million Americans suffer with urinary leakage, frequency of urination, or painful urination and most women with continence problems wait 9 years before seeking help. Dr. Kaufman will provide a thorough evaluation and diagnosis of bladder control problems.  We offer behavioral, non-surgical treatment services based on the federal guidelines on urinary incontinence. Some of these treatment options are education, bladder retraining, pelvic muscle re-education, biofeedback, stimulation therapy, diet modification, and when indicated, medication.  The average number of visits for incontinence treatment is four to six, although the number of visits needed to accomplish your goals is based on your individual symptoms and progress.

Screening for and treatment of STD – sexually transmitted diseases. Many people with an STD might not even know they have and often there are no symptoms but can be affecting your health and cause severe damage to your body.  STD’s are infections that are spread by sexual contact and are the most common contagious disease in the US with about 12 million new cases each year.

Menorrhagia – have you been suffering from heavy periods and cramp-like pains?  Menorrhagia is menstrual bleeding lasting for more than seven days or bleeding that is much heavier than usual for you.  Women suffering from menorrhagia can experience fatigue, anemia, embarrassing accidents and restricted life activities. If you’re familiar with these effects, you know menorrhagia can disrupt your life.  The causes of menorrhagai are many but there are also numerous treatment options available to you, including a new technique know as endometrial ablation, a minimally invasive, out-patient alternative to hysterectomy.
