Bio

Dr. Kelly is one of this country’s leading authorities on using ultrasound to detect cancers in women with dense breast tissue and/or implants.  Since 1993, he has been conducting clinical research on the discovery and characterization of breast cancer by ultrasound, and in 1997 began his journey to develop SonoCiné AWBUS.

His article, “Breast Cancer Detection Using Automated Whole Breast Ultrasound and Mammography in Radiographically Dense Breasts” published in European Radiology (one of the two-most prestigious radiology journals in the world), was recognized as the second-most-cited article in that journal in 2010. To date, over 100 other scientific articles have referenced his article as a reliable source supporting the use of ultrasound in screening for breast cancer.

In 2000, Dr. Kelly launched SonoCiné Inc., and has served in various executive positions with the Company. He is presently Medical Director and Chairman of the Board. SonoCiné has been instrumental in identifying numerous very small cancers that were not detected by mammography, thus saving many lives and avoiding unnecessary chemotherapy treatments in many women.

Dr. Kelly earned his Bachelor of Science degree in biology at Georgetown University. He completed his Medical Degree at St. Louis University, followed by an internship and two years residency in diagnostic radiology at the St. Louis University Service of St. Louis City Hospital. Dr. Kelly was a Lt. Commander in the U.S. Public Health Service. He was the Leo G. Rigler Center Research Fellow at UCLA from 1973 to 1974 and completed his final year of residency at the Wadsworth Veterans Administration Hospital in Los Angeles.

Today, Dr. Kelly remains passionate and dedicated to the early detection of breast cancer. His goal is to educate women about the importance of understanding their breast type so they can make informed decisions about their screening options.
