His education started with a bachelor degree in chemistry from the University of Iowa 1980. His medical degree was obtained from the University of Iowa, Carver College of Medicine in 1984. He completed one year of general surgery training at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C. He was sent to Darmstadt, Germany serving as a General Medical Officer for the United States Army, for three years. He returned to The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics to complete a residency in general surgery 1993. An additional year as a general surgeon with the Army was serviced at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. He then began a 16 year career as a board certified general surgeon with Dubuque Surgery PC, in his home town of Dubuque. In January 2011, secondary to a change in his practice and a keen interest in the treatment of venous disease he opened the Tri-State Vein Center. Within two years of opening, he obtained the RPVI, RPhS, and RVT credentials which pertain to expertise in vascular ultrasound. The ultrasound lab within the office received accreditation from the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) in venous studies in 2012. In 2013 he became a diplomate of the American Board of Venous and Lymphatic Medicine. Professionally, he is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the American Venous Forum, and American College of Phlebology. He currently is the chairman for the Online CME Subcommittee of the American College of Phlebology and a graduate of their Leadership Academy.
