As medical director of the Virginia Harkness Sawtelle Department of Radiation Oncology at HackensackUMC Mountainside, Dr. Jose Barba has helped to advance one of the leading radiation oncology programs in the area. Three years ago, this program was the only one in Essex and Passaic counties accredited by the American College of Radiology, a distinction that signifies adherence to the most stringent standards. Board certified and fellowship trained in radiation oncology, Dr. Barba is part of a highly skilled team of oncologists at Mountainside, including physicians in specialties such as breast, gynecologic, gastrointestinal and thoracic surgical oncology, who meet once weekly for a Tumor Board and once monthly for a Breast Tumor Board.
Dr. Barba previously served as medical director of radiation oncology at the Metcalf Institute of Radiation Oncology at the Hospital Center at Orange and had a private practice in New York for 15 years. Aware of his outstanding reputation, Mountainside recruited him to help strengthen the cancer program. “Our team is experienced, compassionate and committed to providing patients with superior care,” he says. “It’s no wonder the radiation oncology department earns the hospital’s highest patient satisfaction rating month after month on independent Press Ganey and HealthStream surveys.”
Dr. Barba’s professional experience started at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, which led him to Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York where he did his residency, chief residency and three-year fellowship in radiation oncology, and later as an assistant clinical professor.
Dr. Barba is one of New Jersey’s Top Doctor 2013. This is Dr. Barba’s third New Jersey Monthly Top Doctor award.
Radiation oncologists are highly specialized physicians who utilize radiation therapy treatments to treat patients suffering from cancer. Dr. Barba is trained to identify the type of cancer and create a targeted treatment plan that will increase the patient's chances of overcoming the disease. To treat and manage cancer, radiation therapy targets malignancies, working to prevent cancer cells from continually dividing. As a result, radiation therapy can kill cancer cells and shrink tumors & growths.
