Dr. Richard graduated from U.T. Health Science Center, San Antonio in 1982. He did his internship in Internal Medicine at LSU Medical Ctr. Shreveport and his residency in Internal Medicine at St. Paul Medical Ctr in Dallas, Texas. He has been in private practice since 1985 and practices by himself so that he take care of patients as he desires, without the pressure of group practice to see a certain number of patients per day. He no longer participates on Medicare due to the governments pressure to use an electronic medical record, which he found impaired his ability to listen and interact with patients as well as interfering with his ability to mentally evaluate the patient's problems while communicating with them. He is a strong believer in communicating with patients, to the point that patients contact him after hours via his cell phone, not via an answering service.
As an Internist, he treats teenagers and adults with various medical problems and enjoys taking care of multiple generations of families and the challenge of patients with complex medical problems. Due to his training, experience and practice of taking time with patients, he can treat problems many primary care doctors refer on to specialists.
In addition to the common diseases of hypertension, diabetes and high cholesterol, he treats patients with thyroid disorders, auto-immune disorders, acid reflux as well as other GI disorders, asthma, COPD and other pulmonary disorders as well as depression and attention deficit disorder.
The specialty of internal medicine is an area of primary care for adults. Dr. Richard specializes in diagnosing and treating cross-system illnesses that may affect multiple organ systems. When necessary, Dr. Richard can also refer patients to specialists when medically needed. As an example, patients with severe allergies could be referred to an allergist for added diagnostic tests or treatment options.
