Dr. Jay Ellis has been a practicing Pain Management physician and anesthesiologist for over 30 years. After his anesthesiology residency at Wilford Hall Medical Center, Dr. Ellis completed his pain management fellowship at the University of Texas Health Science Center-San Antonio. He served in the Air Force for 24 years, achieving the rank of Colonel. His duties included Chairman and Residency Program Director at Wilford Hall Medical Center and Chief Consultant for Anesthesiology to the Surgeon General of the Air Force. Dr. Ellis practiced medicine on five of the seven continents, with his last Air Force deployment being in support of Special Forces in the Philippines during Operation Enduring Freedom. During his Air Force career he received several awards, including election to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, the Outstanding Graduate in Anesthesiology, the Gold Headed Cane Award for the physician who best exemplifies excellence in clinical care, teaching and research and the Excalibur Award presented by the Society of Air Force Clinical Surgeons in recognition of his professionalism and commitment to military medicine.
Dr. Ellis is dedicated to furthering the specialty of pain management. In addition to his Board Certification in both Anesthesiology and Pain Management, he is a Clinical Professor of Anesthesiology and Pain Management at the University of Texas Health Science Center-San Antonio. He served the American Board of Anesthesiology as a test question author and oral board examiner. He is a member of several medical societies and professional organizations including the International Spine Intervention Society, North American Neuromodulation Society, the International Anesthesia Research Society and the American Society of Anesthesiologists. He maintains an interest in clinical research and he has been the principal investigator for several pain management studies and an invited speaker on pain management topics. He was recognized by “Best Doctors in San Antonio” for both anesthesiology and pain management.
Dr. Ellis treats all chronic pain complaints, but he has special interests in the treatment of cancer pain, interventional management of back pain, and the management of nerve pain due to neuropathy. As a cancer survivor, Dr. Ellis has a special appreciation of the suffering and difficulties produced by chronic pain and illness.
