Jason Billinghurst MD, FAAOS is a board-certified and fellowship-trained orthopedic spine surgeon. He treats disorders of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine, including degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, disc herniations, radiculopathy, myelopathy, spinal infections, and compression fractures.
Dr. Billinghurst was born and raised in New Jersey and graduated magna cum laude from Rutgers University with a Bachelors of Arts degree. He earned his medical degree from Cornell Medical College. While at Cornell, Dr. Billinghurst was involved in research projects at The Hospital for Special Surgery, the top ranked orthopaedic hospital in the country and at Erasmus University Medical Center’s biomechanics laboratory in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
After medical school Dr. Billinghurst completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at The University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey. He then completed a fellowship in spine surgery at the San Diego Center for Spinal Disorders, where he gained extensive experience treating spinal deformities in both children and adults.
Dr. Billinghurst specializes in Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS). He utilizes innovative techniques that result in less blood loss and post-operative pain, which allows for outpatient surgery, short hospital stays and faster recovery times. Whenever possible, Dr. Billinghurst performs motion preservation surgery, such as disc replacements, which may be associated with better long term outcomes, as compared to fusions. Dr. Billinghurst has extensive experience treating osteoporotic compression fractures with a minimally invasive technique called kyphoplasty in the outpatient setting. He prides himself on giving his patients the best chance to regain function and mobility, and return to active, healthy lifestyles. When non-operative care is appropriate, Dr. Billinghurst works closely with other healthcare providers, including physical therapists, physiatrists, and pain management specialists.
Dr. Billinghurst is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS). He is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (FAAOS) and an active member of the North American Spine Society, the J.Robert Gladden Orthopaedic Society, and the Phi Beta Kappa academic honor society. He has been invited to speak at numerous local and regional meetings, taught at surgeon educational programs, and provides consulting services to industry on the design and development of spinal surgical devices.
Specializing in orthopedic spine surgery, Dr. Billinghurst can diagnose and treat a range of conditions affecting the spine. These may include degenerative diseases, arthritic conditions, fractures, tumors, deformities such as scoliosis, and other conditions. Treatment techniques may range from invasive to minimally-invasive surgeries of the spine and vertebrae. However, depending upon the patient's diagnosis and medical history, treatments may be non-surgical in nature.
As an orthopedic surgeon in Florida, Dr. Billinghurst is trained to diagnose and treat all types of injuries to the musculoskeletal system, including the bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, and tendons. After arriving at a specific diagnosis, Dr. Billinghurst will generally resort to surgery when all other treatment methods have been exhausted or ruled out. Patients may require the care of an orthopedic surgeon for fractures, torn ligaments, sprains, sports injuries, and more.
