Bio

Heather Gibbons, M.D. grew up on the Jersey shore and spent most of her youth and early adulthood as a competitive swimmer. She received her undergraduate degree from Harvard College in Cambridge, MA in 1994, and majored in Fine Arts. At this point her passion for health, fitness and taking care of others guided her towards a career in medicine. She graduated from MCP-Hahnemann School of Medicine in Philadelphia, in 2002 and received her Obstetrics and Gynecologic residency training at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire, Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, New Jersey, and Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia. Throughout her medical training, she was nominated for multiple teaching awards and was honored with the “Excellence in Teaching/Golden Apple Award” from the Drexel Medical School Class of 2006 and a “Golden Peach Award” from Emory Medical School.

During a brief hiatus in her residency, Dr. Gibbons served on the faculty at Monmouth University in West Long Branch, New Jersey, as a post-doctoral research fellow performing research in bioterrorism and disaster preparedness and serving in the Medical Reserve Corp.

Dr. Gibbons will join Academia of Women’s Health & Endoscopic Surgery in January, 2015. Prior to this, Dr. Gibbons spent 6 years working in a private practice affiliated with Piedmont Hospital. During this time, she was appointed to the Clinical Teaching Faculty at Emory University School of Medicine’s Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics. She was recognized by the 2009-10 Emory Medical Students for providing outstanding learning experiences.

Dr. Gibbons is Board Certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and her special interests include advanced endoscopic surgery, infectious disease, and public health and disease prevention. She is an Active Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG), an Active Fellow of the American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (ASCCP), a member of the Georgia Obstetrical and Gynecologial Society (GOGS), and a member of the Atlanta Medical Association.

Dr. Gibbons lives in Sandy Springs with her two daughters and son. She loves spending time with her family, friends and cats. She is active in her community and volunteers at her children’s schools and her church, St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church. She is also a member of the Harvard Club of Georgia and is a volunteer interviewer for the Harvard Admissions Committee. She enjoys outdoor activities, exercising, scuba-diving, and was a nationally-ranked and world-ranked swimmer.
