I was referred to Dr. Gladstone for removal of a skin cancer by another dermatologist who biopsied and discovered the cancer. He said that Dr. Gladstone was an expert at skin cancer surgery using the Mohs technique to look at each area of the cancer microscopically as the surgery progressed tomake sure that all of it was removed without removal of excess normal skin. Dr. Gladstone and his staff explained the procedure, which was painless except for the tiny prick of the initial local anesthetic. The procedure was exactly as he described, took about an hour and 15 minutes overall. I returned two weeks later for suture removal, and it has healed very well with only a tiny linear scar where much skin was removed. Dr. Gladstone stretched and adjusted the skin around the cancer so that the surgery is barely visible. The staff was very helpful, and the office is warm and nicely decorated.

About Dr. Gladstone
Dr. Gladstone

Bio

Dr Gladstone has been active in his professional societies. He has been on the Board of Directors and the past President of the San Francisco Dermatology Society as well as the Board of Directors and past President of the Pacific Dermatology Association, the largest regional dermatology society in the United States. He was also on the Board of Directors of both the San Mateo Division and the California Division of the American Cancer Society.

Dr Gladstone has lectured worldwide on his cosmetic and reconstructive techniques. He has been the editor of educational videos on both cosmetic procedures and reconstruction for the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery, the specialty’s primary surgical society. He is currently the Program Chair of the 2015 Annual Meeting. He has been the past Director of the Advanced Cosmetic Surgery Course at the American Academy of Dermatology Annual Meeting. He has served on Master Reconstruction Panels here and abroad, and was selected for the prestigious Iron Surgeon Competition. Because of his experience, Dr Gladstone has often been asked to be an expert witness in dermatologic surgery malpractice cases.

Dr Gladstone has 100 publications on mohs surgery, reconstruction and aesthetic procedures including nearly 30 chapters, and is the co-editor of a well received book on cosmetic procedures that has been translated into several languages.

Dr Gladstone feels fortunate to be in the field of medicine, and privileged to treat patients. It is important for him to give back. For 11 years, he volunteered at the student run Stanford homeless clinic in Menlo Park.  He is the co-founder with Murad Alam, MD of Northwestern of the Blade and Light Society and is the President of Blade and Light International. This is a nonprofit organization (www.bladelight.org) that sends teams of fellowship trained mohs surgeons abroad to perform volunteer mohs surgery and reconstruction. He is also co-chair with Kathleen Welsh, MD of the American Academy of Dermatology Bay Area fundraiser Take A Hike, Skin Cancer.

Prior to medical school, Dr Gladstone was an award winning photojournalist and sports editor in Colorado. That two dimensional visual design background has served as a foundation for his three dimensional vision in reconstruction and aesthetic procedures. As a former competitive athlete, he understands the arbitrariness of the aging process. In his spare time, he plays tennis, squash, skis, practices the classical guitar, shoots photos and continues to write.
