​Dr. Garrett D. Herzon, MD, FACS is a board-certified otolaryngologist and head and neck surgeon at the Cedars-Sinai Sinus Center. Dr. Herzon specializes in medical treatments for patients who are not yet ready for sinus surgery or for those who wish to try non-surgical medical treatments as an alternative to surgery. He provides state of the art in-office testing for sinusitis diagnosis.Dr. Herzon has extensive knowledge and experience with medical treatments for sinus problems affecting the voice. He is an experienced laryngologist and voice specialist. He has a special interest in determining if the origin of a patient's voice problem is from sinus drainage or from reflux disease. He treats professional voice users such as cantors, actors and singers as well as non-professionals with voice problems.Dr. Herzon is an editor for the Ear, Nose and Throat Journal. He co-authored the first two editions of the American Academy of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery publication,Practice Parameters and Indications for Surgery, Guidelines for Surgery of Ear, Nose and Throat. He has written and presented over 50 papers and presentations in the field of ENT (ear,nose and throat) including papers on sinus allergies and endoscopic sinus surgery. He published an important research paper that determined patients can develop allergies to bacteria in the nose. Dr. Herzon served as Chairman of Quality Management for the American Academy of Otolaryngology, Inc. in Washington, D.C., for two terms.Holding six patents with two patents pending, research and medical inventions are important parts of Dr. Herzon's medical life. In 1989, he was the first to develop and describe a method to help make sinus surgery safer using Visual Evoked Potential (VEP), an intra-operative monitoring technique.Dr. Herzon earned his bachelor's degree at Millikin University in Illinois and his medical degree at the Chicago Medical School/University of Health Sciences in Illinois. He completed a residency in general surgery at Northwestern University Medical School, a residency at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and a residency in Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery at Northwestern University Medical School: Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Mercy Hospital, and Cook County. Dr. Herzon completed a fellowship in Head and Neck Cancer Surgery at Northwestern University.Dr. Herzon is a Diplomat of the American Board of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery. Dr. Herzon is also a Fellow of the American Broncho-Esophagological Society and a Fellow of the American College of Surgery. Dr. Herzon was an assistant professor for ten years in the Department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery, at the Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago and is a past staff member of the Chicago Rehabilitation Institute.
