Dr. Douglas Won, director and founder of SpineCARE, is a fellowshiptrained spine surgeon, board-certified by The American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Chosen as one of America’s Top Orthopedist/Spine Surgeons by Research Consumers’ Council of America, he provides the most comprehensive methods of minimally invasive and endoscopic (camera-assisted) laser spine surgeries available to treat cervical, thoracic and lumbar disorders. Dr. Won uses cuttingedge surgical techniques to avoid traditional, open back and neck fusion surgeries.
Dr. Won attended medical school at the University of Texas, Galveston, TX and completed his residency in orthopedics at Washington University in St. Louis, MO. He was fellowship-trained in orthopedicspine and neuro-spine at William Beaumont Spine Center, Royal Oak, MI, and in deformaties of the spine at Washington University, St. Louis. His dual-fellowship training is recognized as the highest level in spine surgery training.
Dr. Won was the first surgeon in Texas to perform endoscopic laser spine surgery with a 3mm incision. This procedure is performed without general anesthesia, and the patient is able to walk out of the surgery center within a few hours. The incision does not need any stitches and only requires a BAND-AID®. With minimal blood loss and fast recovery, the patient may return to work in just a few days. Dr. Won also recognizes that surgery is not always the best option and uses the latest nonsurgical methods to treat neck and back pain prior to exploring surgical options. In fact, 95 percent of his patients improve through nonsurgical treatment.
A member of the Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery, North American Spine Society, and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), Dr. Won is active in research and development of innovative spine care. He has been published in numerous scientific journals and textbooks, and has lectured internationally on all aspects of spinal disorders. He has also developed new minimally invasive spine surgery techniques, as well as state-of-the-art minimally invasive surgical devices, to treat spinal disorders. Dr. Won appeared regularly as a medical expert for ABC/WFAA-TV, CBS Radio, The Marty Griffin Show on 1080 KRLD, Sunday Morning Magazine with Mark Willis on FM. 103.7 KVIL and FM 106.7 KDL. Additionally, he is a clinical assistant professor at the UT Southwestern Medical School. He continues to lecture and train other spine surgeons around the world in the latest minimally invasive techniques.
Specializing in orthopedic spine surgery, Dr. Won can diagnose and treat a range of conditions affecting the spine. These may include degenerative diseases, arthritic conditions, fractures, tumors, deformities such as scoliosis, and other conditions. Treatment techniques may range from invasive to minimally-invasive surgeries of the spine and vertebrae. However, depending upon the patient's diagnosis and medical history, treatments may be non-surgical in nature.
As an interventional pain management specialist in Texas, Dr. Won focuses on relieving chronic pain in patients. Interventional pain specialists offer pain relief by blocking or interrupting the transmission of neurological pain signals in the brain. Dr. Won may perform treatments such as spinal cord and nerve stimulation, nerve or medial branch blocks, medication management, or the implantation of drug delivery systems.
