Carla Perissinotto, MD, is an assistant clinical professor in the Division of Geriatrics, Department of Medicine at UC San Francisco. Perissinotto is dedicated to working in both community and academic settings; she divides her clinical activities between a community health setting at the Over60 Health Center in Berkeley and in working with UCSF Care at Home--which provides medical care to home bound older adults.
Carla received her medical school training at Tufts University and completed both her Internal Medicine and Geriatrics training at UCSF. In addition, she holds a Masters in Health Science from Johns Hopkins University, from the Department of Population and Family Health. Carla joined the faculty in August 2010 as a clinician-educator.
Carla's interests are in working with diverse communities and improving the training of internal medicine residents and all learners in the care of elderly patients. Perissinotto also has a special interest in teaching primary care doctors how to more effectively recognize cognitive impairment in the outpatient primary care setting. Perissinotto is also a recipient of the HRSA Geriatric Academic Career Award 2010-2015, with which she is developing curricula to teach a wide range of learners on the care of elderly patients in diverse settings. She also recently gained national and international recognition for her research on the effects of loneliness on the health of older adults.

In some cases, illnesses or injuries in seniors may overlap to create complicated diagnostic and treatment processes. Dr. Perissinotto is trained to diagnose, treat and manage these and any related medical situations in seniors.
The specialty of internal medicine is an area of primary care for adults. Dr. Perissinotto specializes in diagnosing and treating cross-system illnesses that may affect multiple organ systems. Dr. Perissinotto can also refer patients to specialists when medically necessary. For example, patients with severe heart problems may be referred to a cardiologist for additional diagnostic tests or treatments.
Palliative care physicians provide specialized medical care for people living with serious illness. Doctors who specialize in palliative care focus on providing relief from symptoms and stress, offering care that is focused on improving quality of life for both the patient and the family. Palliative care is appropriate at any age, and at any stage in a serious illness, and can be provided along with curative treatment.
