Brian M. Long, M.D. obtained his undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering from Duke University. He is a 1997 graduate of the Medical College of Georgia where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society. He received his General Surgery Residency training at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center / Parkland Memorial Hospital where he was twice awarded the Resident Teaching Award.
Beginning in 2002, Dr. Long was stationed at Andrews Air Force Base, where he performed general surgery and led a Critical Care Air Transport Team on deployment in the Persian Gulf. From 2004 2006, he worked at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, where he served as the Chief of Bariatric and Minimally Invasive Surgery and as an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.
As the Medical Director of the Sibley Center for Weight Loss Surgery, Dr. Long specializes in laparoscopic weight loss surgery, including gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, and adjustable gastric band procedures. Additionally, Dr. Long has extensive experience and interest in other advanced laparoscopic and open general surgery procedures, including abdominal wall hernia repairs, small intestine and colon resection, cholecystectomy, Nissen fundoplication for reflux, splenectomy and adrenalectomy.
Dr. Long is board certified in general surgery and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is also a fellow of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery, as well as a member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons.
