Surgical oncologists offer surgical treatment for patients suffering from a variety of cancers. The goal of a surgical oncologist is to stop the advancement of the disease through surgical intervention, sending the patient into remission. Dr. Tong may offer a range of surgical treatment types including preventive surgery, curative surgery, diagnostic surgery, debulking surgery, palliative surgery, restorative surgery, and more. Dr. may offer surgery in conjunction with other treatments like radiation therapy, chemotherapy or hormone therapy.
Cardiothoracic surgery is a highly specialized field of medicine that incorporates surgical procedures to treat diseases or trauma to the organs and structures of the chest – including the heart, lungs and esophagus. Dr. Tong may perform both minimally invasive or invasive procedures ranging from angioplasty to open heart surgery or transplant surgeries.
Following rigorous and lengthy training, thoracic surgeons are uniquely qualified to perform complex surgeries on the chest, or thorax as it is sometimes called. Their focus is usually on the lungs, esophagus, and other areas of the chest, and may also include the heart. As such, Dr. Tong may see patients in North Carolina for a wide range of surgeries, for example removing cancer causing tumors from the esophagus and chest wall, or even a lung transplant.
