An experienced neonatologist from Charlotte, North Carolina, Dr. Allen Cherer has spent over 35 years caring for newborns and supporting their families. Dr. Cherer is dedicated to providing excellent service to his patients -- especially during the early stages of life, when specific conditions and scenarios must be handled delicately.
Dr. Cherer earned his B.A. in Biology from the University of Virginia and his M.D. from the Medical College of Georgia; he then studied Pediatrics at the University of Louisville’s Kosair Children’s Hospital. Following his residency, he was commissioned in the United States Air Force Medical Corps where he became Chief of Pediatrics at the USAF Regional Hospital Minot (North Dakota).
Dr. Allen Cherer proceeded to a fellowship in neonatal-perinatal medicine in the Joint Program in Neonatology at Harvard Medical School, where his research included the causes and sequelae of intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) in preterm infants. His work culminated in a published manuscript that proposed a comprehensive management protocol of IVH.
In his medical practice, Cherer has provided care for thousands of newborns and support for their families over the years. He has held clinical faculty positions at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and the Cabarrus Family Medicine Residency Program in North Carolina.
Dr. Cherer has been active with quality improvement initiatives sponsored by the Vermont Oxford Network (VON) to improve the care to infants and families affected by substance abuse disorders and by the Perinatal Quality Collaborative of North Carolina (PQCNC) to further engage patients and families in hospital care practices.
