(HealthDay News) -- Bad breath can be caused by foods, such as onions or fish. But it can also signal a problem with the mouth, such as an infection or gum disease.

When bad breath is caused by everyday eating and drinking, the American Dental Association offers these suggestions to help tame the problem:

  • Brush your teeth and floss frequently.
  • Schedule regular checkups with your dentist.
  • When brushing your teeth, brush your tongue.
  • If you wear dentures, remove and thoroughly clean them overnight.
