(HealthDay News) -- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) can be a nuisance at night while you're trying to sleep.

The National Sleep Foundation recommends:

  • Staying upright after eating a large meal.
  • Opting for smaller meals.
  • Restricting GERD-triggering foods, such as onions, chocolate, alcohol and high-fat fare.
  • Avoiding potassium supplements.
  • Swallowing medications with plenty of water, and taking them while in an upright position.
