I am an educator and football coach who is 7 years removed from a back injury that lead to somewhat of a fusion at l-4 and l-5 (installed an aspen device). The surgery relieved some pain, but much remained and new pain arrived. I was sent to pain management and at first I had a different doctor everytime and each tried something different instead of hearing what pain I felt or was I was feeling emotionally about my family's and my future. They insisted they knew what I was feeling and needed treated and how. But finally I Asked for Puppala specifically and he was/still is great. He listened to me, what and how I was feeling, not just physically, but the emotional side of the pain too. And, which is very important to me, didn't treat me like a drug addict for needing medicinal assistance. His nerve block injections/ablations worked better than any previous doctor and I'm so grateful for the ability to play and raise my 2 year old and 8 month old without worrying about the pain keeping me down. I literally just take tramadol on a daily basis as needed and sometimes way less than the prescribed daily amount depending on my activities. If you really want your life back, Dr. Puppala is who you want to see. Thank- you Dr. Puppala!

My experience with Dr.Puppala was absolutely remarkable. He was knowledgae, helpful and empathetic of my pain. I could tell he truly cared and was sincere with all of his patients and compared with my last docter who told me to go to work after my onsite injury. When I couldn't even walk. I highly recommend anyone who is suffering from pain to go to this remarkable doctor!

Cold and cocky are the words that best describe this doctor. After several visits I decided to drive much further to see a much better doctor. I would NEVER RECOMMEND THIS DOCTOR.

Dr. Puppala’s reply: I'm sorry you had a bad experience, especially since I strive to achieve patient satisfaction through profound pain relief and superior functional outcomes. I am not sure why you have to drive much further to find a pain doctor since there are numerous excellent pain physicians in Douglasville, but I hope you return closer to home for a re-evaluation by another board-certified pain specialist. Feel free to call the 24-hour Pain Relief Hotline at 1-800-976-8150 to discuss your case over the phone with a board-certified pain specialist if you'd like.

Dr. Puppala was excellent in allowing me to choose the path I wanted to proceed for my pain management. He understand that I did not want to have to rely on meds in order to feel better and offered me options as to what I wanted to do. He listened to me and agreed with me that he also did not want me to have to continue to see him or rely on the meds to feel better. It was reassuring for me and I am pleased with my care thus far.

Dr. Puppala’s reply: Thank you for letting me help you Kesha! I wish you all the best.

Dr. Puppala is a fantastic doctor and helped me when no other pain specialists could. I've been to at least four other doctors for my back pain and none of them were doing the right kind of procedures for the pain I have - they just kept doing epidurals and more epidurals. Finally, I saw Dr. P who immediately told me he would recommend something different. He did nerve blocks to my joints and then cauterized those nerves, and now I'm 99% pain free in my back. I don't need to take any narcotics anymore, and I only take over-the-counter medications on a bad day when it rains or after playing golf. Thanks Dr. P!

Dr. Puppala’s reply: That's great to hear Jack! I'm very glad you are doing better.

Dr. Puppala is a double board-certified anesthesiology pain specialist who was born and raised in Chicago in a family of hard-working immigrants. He began his commitment to medicine and scientific research as a teenager when he began conducting research in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Loyola University Medical Center in his spare time while attending the world-renowned Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, founded by Nobel laureate Dr. Leon Lederman. He graduated from the University of Illinois with honors in less than twelve months and earned his medical degree from the nationally top-ranked Washington University School of Medicine.

Dr. Puppala’s interest in pain medicine was sparked when he received a student grant from the National Institutes of Health to conduct research on the effects of peripheral nerve thermocoagulation under the mentorship of Chief of Plastic Surgery Dr. Susan MacKinnon, who performed the world’s first nerve transplant. It was during this time that Dr. Puppala first developed his unmatched reputation for his excellent technical skills by performing microsurgical neurosurgery in the Washington University Peripheral Nerve Surgery Laboratory at the age of 19.  Following medical school, he returned to Chicago to complete his surgical internship at Rush University Medical Center, where he logged completion of over 100 operative surgical cases.

He then underwent additional sub-specialization in anesthesiology at Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he received his training in pain medicine under the tutelage of Dr. Kenneth Candido, an internationally-renowned thought leader who himself trained under Dr. Alon Winnie, who originated many of the interventional techniques used by pain physicians today.  While in training, Dr. Puppala presented numerous original research works at a variety of national and international meetings, many of which won first-place awards. He won the Illinois Society of Anesthesiologists award for best original research with the world’s first report of successful treatment of HIV-related polyneuropathy using spinal cord stimulation. He also received the Illinois Masonic Medical Center award for best resident research in recognition of his efforts to advance the field of pain medicine.

With his training lineage in pain medicine tracing back to one of the original founders of the specialty, Dr. Puppala joined Comprehensive Pain Management and Alliance Spine & Pain Centers after finishing his pain medicine fellowship at Northwestern University and undergoing double board-certification by the American Board of Anesthesiology. He has expertise in the treatment of a variety of chronic painful conditions including neck pain, low back pain, headaches, migraines, foot pain, knee pain, phantom limb pain, abdominal pain, pelvic pain, neuropathic pain, diabetic neuropathy, post-laminectomy syndrome, postoperative pain, knee pain, myofascial pain syndrome, complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS/RSD), cancer-related pain, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with a multi-modal approach. He is exceptionally skilled in a variety of minimally invasive techniques including ultrasound-guided injections, epidural injections, joint injections, diagnostic nerve blocks, radiofrequency denervation, intrathecal pump implantation, spinal cord stimulation, vertebroplasty, and kyphoplasty.

Dr. Puppala is especially pleased to offer his patients the latest cutting-edge technologies to help treat their pain, and he prides himself on tackling the toughest and most complex cases that other specialists are unable or unwilling to address.  Dr. Puppala is among the busiest neuromodulation specialists in the country and performs more spinal cord stimulator trials and implants than any other physician in the Atlanta area.  He has been honored by being selected as one of the first physicians in the country to offer Dorsal Root Ganglion stimulation.  Dr. Puppala has the rare distinction of being the only pain specialist in Georgia named to the Editorial Board of the official journal of the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians.  He has also been invited by the Georgia Society of Interventional Pain Physicians to lecture other pain specialists on transforaminal epidural safety and head & neck blocks during their annual meeting.  Dr. Puppala serves on the Board of Directors of the Medical Association of Georgia, Board of Directors of the Georgia Society of Interventional Pain Physicians, and Clinical Faculty of the Medical College of Georgia, and is recognized as an in-demand medical lecturer and instructor to his peers.

Dr. Puppala treats all of his patients with compassion, empathy, respect, and concern regardless of their background or circumstances. He strives to truly listen to his patients and educate them about their own pain in order to empower patients to formulate the most responsible treatment plan possible in collaboration with their physician. He is deeply committed to his patients and achieves superior pain relief outcomes using a holistic multidisciplinary approach by integrating interventional techniques, medication management, and functional restoration within a comprehensive biopsychosocial feedback model. His goal is to enable his patients to regain a life free of suffering while also minimizing the need for chronic opioid dependence.

Dr. Puppala is active with the Medical Association of Georgia and Georgia Society of Interventional Pain Practitioners in order to raise public awareness of issues facing those afflicted with chronic to legislators and policy-makers. He is also an official ambassador for Shatterproof, a non-profit organization dedicated to combating drug addiction.  By dedicating his free time to these causes, he hopes to improve the lives of his patients outside of the doctor’s office. Dr. Puppala is also in demand as a medical expert witness related to anesthesiology and pain medicine. In his free time, he enjoys music and art, stays active in professional networking, volunteers at an animal shelter, and contributes to a variety of philanthropic causes.
