Dr. Plerhoples earned his Bachelor’s degree from Harvard University and continued his education to receive a Master’s degree in Public Health from Boston University. He furthered his education by receiving his Medical degree from the New York University School of Medicine, where he graduated as a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.
Dr. Plerhoples began his surgical training at Stanford University, where he also completed a research fellowship in surgical education and quality. He authored several journal publications on improving surgical technique and patient care, and has contributed to chapters in several medical texts including SAGES Quality, Outcomes, and Safety Manual, Kendig’s Disorders of the Respiratory Tract in Children, and Cardiothoracic Surgery Review.
He continued his surgical residency locally at Inova Fairfax Hospital where he was appointed the Education and Quality Chief Resident and earned the General Surgery Team Outstanding Resident 2013 Award. Dr. Plerhoples went on to complete his training in colorectal surgery as a fellow at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, working with many of the most prominent leaders in the field.
Dr. Plerhoples and his wife have two daughters. He spends his free time with his family and enjoys playing guitar, hiking, fishing, basketball, and grilling.
Colorectal surgeons like Dr. Plerhoples specialize in the surgical and non-surgical care for structures of the lower digestive system, including the intestines, colon and rectum. Dr. Plerhoples may treat conditions such as colon and rectal cancer, polyps, fecal incontinence, ulcerative colitis, inflammatory bowel disease and hemorrhoids. In the past, colorectal surgeons were commonly known as "proctologists."
As a general surgeon in Virginia, Dr. Plerhoples performs a range of of surgeries and operations, usually focusing on areas and organs of the abdomen and their related organs. Dr. Plerhoples may utilize invasive or minimally-invasive surgical techniques, with the latter reducing recovery time and stress on the patient's body.
