Bio

Over the course of his career with the guidance and mentorship provided by Dr. J. Richard Steadman, Dr. Singleton has utilized the philosophies and advanced joint preservation techniques to restore stability and normal motion to the knee that have brought Dr. Steadman success in his career.

After graduating from Stanford University and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, Dr. Singleton completed his sports medicine fellowship at the Steadman Hawkins Clinic in Vail in 1997. He then returned to Texas with his family, entering private practice in his home town of Fort Worth. In his practice, Dr. Singleton worked as an orthopaedic surgeon and team physician with the Texas Rangers Professional Baseball Team, the University of Texas-Arlington Division I collegiate teams, and Texas Wesleyan University athletic teams. He also served as an orthopaedic surgery consultant to the National Hockey League Players Association, Colonial NIT Professional Golf Tournament, Texas World Wrestling Entertainment, and as a team physician to several other local minor league and collegiate sports teams. Between 1996 -2001, Dr. Singleton worked as team physician with the United States Ski and Snowboard teams.

He and his family relocated to Spartanburg, South Carolina, in 2004, serving as a founding member of the Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas. With the relocation of that clinic to Greenville, South Carolina, Dr. Singleton remained in Spartanburg, assisting in the formation of Village Orthopaedic Surgery in 2008.

Dr. Singleton has been recognized by the American Society of Orthopaedic Sports Medicine for his cartilage restoration research and advances in microfracture. In addition, Dr. Singleton has explored the use of the laser doppler in arthroscopic surgery, attempting to better characterize how tendons heal after different types of repair. His research interests include articular cartilage repair and improvement of the microfracture technique.

In recognition of his leadership and service in South Carolina, Dr. Singleton was selected as a Liberty Fellow, a two year Aspen Institute affiliated leadership program. The Aspen Institute is an educational and policy studies organization based in Washington, DC. Its mission is to foster leadership based on enduring values and to provide a nonpartisan venue for dealing with critical issues. Dr. Singleton completed this fellowship in 2008 and remains engaged in enduring values-based leadership.

Dr. Singleton is board certified in orthopaedic surgery and is a diplomat of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is a member of the AOA and of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. He is a former member of the Fellowship of the American College of Surgeons and of the Arthroscopy Association of North America.

He now returns to Vail and The Steadman Clinic, assisting Dr. Steadman as Dr. Steadman moves into retirement. He is joined by his wife, Marion B. Singleton, and their twin student/athlete soccer and baseball players, Jon Thomas and Jake.
