Dr. Goldstein is a world-renowned dermatologist who developed many of the procedures for tattoo removal and he remains a leading practitioner in that specialty, having trained hundreds of physicians from around the globe.
A graduate of Columbia College (1955) and SUNY Downstate (1959), Dr. Goldstein completed his dermatology residency at the Skin and Cancer Hospital (Bellevue and NYU’s Postgraduate Medical Center). He achieved the rank of Captain before completing his military service in Hawaii and was invited to become Chief of Dermatology for the Honolulu Medical Group and Director of its Research and Education Foundation Laboratory. His groundbreaking research led to the development of the first sunscreen, and in 1972, the American Academy of Dermatology recognized his work with its Original Research in the Prevention of Skin Cancers award. Dr. Goldstein also pioneered the use of photographic techniques for the early detection of skin cancers. Other clinical accomplishments include the introduction of cryotherapy for the treatment of acne and use of the laser in the treatment of Kaposi’s sarcoma.
A prodigious author, Dr. Goldstein published The Skin You Live In (1978) and served as Editor of the Hawaii Medical Journal for more that decade when named Editor Emeritus. The recipient of many awards, he became the first specialist in dermatology named a Laureate Fellow by the American College of Physicians (2005) and more recently he was named a "Leading Physician of the World" by The International Association of Dermatologists.
