Dr. Grimm clearly remembers her days at Plainfield High school. Until the middle of her junior year, she suffered from intractable asthma and missed many days of school. Indeed, on one of her sick days at home, she was looking through Life Magazine and there was a lead article on the Women’s Medical College in Philadelphia. Until then she did not know a woman could become a physician. She was contemplating a career as a teacher, but it was at that moment she decided she wanted to become a physician, since after all, it is hard for a child to learn if he or she is sick. Her asthma improved remarkably after she saw a new physician, Dr. Paul Johnson, who prescribed her one of the newer asthma medications. She felt like a new person and became more involved in the life of PHS trying out for secretary of the class and also trying out to be a majorette. Dr. Boyer, who was her math teacher, urged her to look at Muhlenberg College, which had an excellent premed program.
Dr. Grimm matriculated at Muhlenberg and had an amazing four years at the college, majoring in chemistry and participating in campus life. Then she went to two new medical schools: Rutgers for her first two years and Mount Sinai School of Medicine for her last two years. Both schools were very positive experiences. From there she went to Johns Hopkins Hospital for a three year residency in Pediatrics, a year of chief residency in the ER and two years as a faculty member. She returned to Mount Sinai in 1978 to be director of the Pediatric Emergency Room and ultimately took on other responsibilities as Division Chief of Pediatric Ambulatory Care and Vice-Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics. At both Hopkins and Mount Sinai, she was actively involved in the care of asthmatic children. Dr. Grimm stayed at Mount Sinai as a full-time faculty member for approximately 20 years.
Building on her emergency room experience, she took on another specialty, that of Child Abuse Pediatrics. In 1997, she changed positions to become the medical director of the New York Center for Children, a child abuse evaluation and treatment center. Here she mentors medical students and pediatric residents from around the world on child abuse and she provides expert opinions for the courts and child protective services. In addition, she maintains a private pediatric practice on Roosevelt Island in NYC where she cares for many international patients. Fortunately, very few of her patients have asthma. Dr. Grimm is blessed with two adult children and a granddaughter. She really sees God’s hand in her life throughout all these years and knows that even suffering can have a purpose.
