Dr. Javier Andrade grew up in Caracas, Venezuela where he began his medical training at the most prestigious University in the country. After receiving his Medical Degree he had the opportunity to work in some of the most prestigious Medical Centers in the United States including The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX where he performed Clinical research; the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN where he did his surgical Internship; and the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX where he completed his surgical residency and received the Golden Scalpel award as an outstanding surgical resident. After completing his general surgery training he went to complete an Interventional Endoscopy, Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery Fellowship at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital.
After completing his fellowship, Dr. Andrade joined one of the largest Bariatric surgical practices in the New York Metro Area; He has held multiple Clinical and Academic appointments and served as Chairman of the Department of Surgery, Chief of Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery and Program Director of the General Surgery Residency at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital from 2014 -2018 where he had the opportunity to perform clinical research in minimally invasive/Bariatric Surgery and also helped train future and actively practicing surgeons in these latest surgical techniques.
Dr. Andrade has performed over 3000 advanced laparoscopic and endoscopic procedures including more than 600 Bariatric procedures (Gastric Bypass, Sleeve Gastrectomy, adjustable gastric band placement, Revisional Bariatric Surgery). In addition, he is one of the few Fellowship trained Interventional Endoscopic Surgeon in the New York Metro Area performing endoscopic revision of previous gastric bypass, Endoscopic gastrointestinal stenting and suturing to provide a minimally invasive way to treat Bariatric surgery complications without the need of additional surgeries.
Dr. Andrade has received “America's Top Surgeons in Bariatric Surgery” award by The Consumer Research Council of America in multiple occasions; he has also received the “Patient Choice Award” as well as having been voted one of the “Most Compassionate Doctors” in the country by Vitals.
Dr. Andrade is a Board-certified General Surgeon, Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, active member the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, and he is also Associate Editor for Advances in Obesity, Weight Management & Control journal.
