Duane R. Monteith, MD, FACS is an experienced cardiothoracic surgeon serving southern New Jersey including Burlington, Camden, Gloucester and Atlantic counties. He specializes in minimally invasive thoracic surgery (robotic and VATS) and thoracic surgical oncology. He also promotes the importance of lung cancer screening and lung nodule surveillance. Dr. Monteith strives to establish strong, communicative relationships with his patients to ensure they receive an optimal level of care from the initial consultation to long after their recovery. He takes a collaborative approach to patient-centered care and values careful listening. He is affiliated with Jefferson Health New Jersey and is the director of Thoracic Oncology at the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center - Washington Township.
Dr. Monteith received his Bachelors of Science degree from Howard University with a major in Biology and minor in Chemistry, where he graduated magna cum laude and was inducted into the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa. He then stayed on to receive his Doctorate of Medicine from Howard University College of Medicine (for which he was awarded the distinguished Trustees Scholarship, a full-tuition merit-based scholarship).
He completed his General Surgery residency and chief residency at SUNY Downstate Medical Center. He received his fellowship training in Cardiothoracic Surgery at New York University Medical Center.
Dr. Monteith is board certified in Thoracic and Cardiac Surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery (ABTS). He holds medical licenses in the states of New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. He is also a member of many professional organizations including the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), the American College of Surgery, the American College of Chest Physicians, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the Eastern Cardiothoracic Surgical Society, the Frank C. Spencer Surgical Society, the Clarence Dennis Society, the Cardiothoracic Surgery Network, the American Medical Association and the Medical Society of New Jersey.
Following rigorous and lengthy training, thoracic surgeons are uniquely qualified to perform complex surgeries on the chest, or thorax as it is sometimes called. Their focus is usually on the lungs, esophagus, and other areas of the chest, and may also include the heart. As such, Dr. Monteith may see patients in New Jersey for a wide range of surgeries, for example removing cancer causing tumors from the esophagus and chest wall, or even a lung transplant.
