Dr. Peterson is a native of Texas and a long time Red Raider. He originally graduated from Texas Tech in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and spent several years in the defense industry at Lockheed Martin in Florida before migrating back to Texas to change gears. Returning to Texas Tech he received graduate degrees in Chemistry and Biology before entering medical school at the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center in 1997. Dr. Peterson developed a passion for Minimally Invasive Laparoscopic and Robotic surgery.
In 2015 Dr. Peterson joined the Texas Tech Department of Surgery as an Associate Professor of Surgery helping to establish the Division of Minimally Invasive Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgery. During this time that he continued to focus his practice on benign foregut work which deals with Hiatal Hernias and GERD (Heartburn). Currently he has a passion for helping people with obesity related and heartburn issues and only performs bariatric and reflux surgery.
Dr. Peterson is an active member and fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Society of Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), and the Society for Laproendoscopic Surgeons (SLS).
