As the chief of neuro-oncology and the codirector of the Brain Tumor Center at NYU Langone, my highest priority is to ensure that people receive the absolute best care.I work with a diverse team of neuro-oncologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, radiation oncologists, neuroradiologists, neuropathologists, nurses, and coordinators to treat people who have brain tumors, ranging from the most common to the most rare and complex. Together, we combine our resources and collective knowledge of the latest research findings to tailor an optimal treatment plan for each patient.To continue to improve the lives of our patients, however, we need new therapies. Neurosurgeon Dr. John Golfinos and I lead a multifaceted team of neuro-oncology researchers that focuses on topics that range from basic biology to experimental therapies.I promote team-based research and collaboration, with the ultimate goal of significantly improving outcomes, in terms of both survival and quality of life. We develop innovative, experimental treatment approaches in the laboratory and in clinical trials. My own research focuses on translating the substantial knowledge we have accumulated in the field of neuro-oncology in recent years into meaningful results, such as improved clinical trial designs that more accurately determine the effectiveness of new therapies.My recent projects have focused on understanding the impact of mutations found in gliomas”tumors that arise from glial cells in the brain.
