What Is Tuberous Breast Surgery?
If your breasts never developed quite right and look somewhat different from the norm, the problem may be due to a congenital abnormality known as tuberous breasts. The condition typically causes the breasts to be misshapen, and it can be emotionally devastating for the women who have it.
However, it can be corrected with surgery. Let’s take a deeper look at what tuberous breast surgery is, what’s involved, and how long it takes to recover.
What are ‘Tuberous Breasts’?
Tuberous breasts — also called tubular breasts — are breasts that don’t develop normally and have structural differences that distinguish them from ‘normal’ breasts. Breasts generally have a round shape with breast tissue that spreads out across the chest, but tuberous breasts often appear elongated or tube-shaped.
Tuberous breasts can describe a range of abnormalities, including…
- Breasts that are very small, asymmetric, or develop unevenly
- Breasts with puffy nipples or nipples that turn inward
- Sagging breasts
- Triangular shaped breasts
Women with tuberous breasts may notice a marked difference in the size and shape of one or both breasts. In some cases, one breast may grow at the normal rate, while the other one may not form correctly, and develop an irregular shape. There are also instances in which the milk glands are not fully developed, and this will affect a woman’s ability to breast feed.
Medical researchers are not entirely sure what causes tubular breasts, but the symptoms may range from mild to severe.

About Tuberous Breast Surgery
Tuberous breasts can have different degrees of deformity, so the type of surgery recommended will depend on the problem that exists. Surgery is performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia.
The treatment of tuberous breasts often requires a multifaceted approach, because of the specific requirements. Surgery may involve several cosmetic procedures and techniques including breast lift and breast augmentation surgery, it all depends.
Since tuberous breast deformity varies, the surgical process that is used will depend on the needs that have to be addressed, and the patient’s desired outcome. Clients should therefore consult with a board certified plastic surgeon regarding treatment.
Tuberous breast surgery is usually done in conjunction with the following procedures:
- Breast Augmentation
This is recommended if the breasts lack volume, or are very small because there is little breast tissue. Adding volume is typically done with the use of a saline or silicone breast implant. Breast implants also help to improve symmetry. - Breast Lift Surgery
This may be required to correct sagging and improve the tubular shape. It can also improve the nipple/areolar complex. - Tissue Expansion
Some women with very little breast tissue may require a tissue expander. The expanders are used to gradually stretch the breast tissue. This will eventually increase the volume of the breast, and stretch the narrow base that is often a characteristic of tuberous breasts.

Recovering from Tuberous Breast Surgery
Because there is likely to be some soreness and swelling, therefore patients are advised to take it easy for the first few days. They are also required to wear a surgical bra for at least 7 days. Depending on the extent of the surgery, drainage tubes may be needed for 4-5 days.
Most patients are able to return to work after one week, but those with physically demanding jobs may require additional time off. Walking and other light activity can be resumed the day after surgery, but strenuous exercise should be delayed for at least 2 weeks.
Patients should remember that recovery times differ from one patient to the next, so they should pay attention to the post-operative instructions given by their plastic surgeon.
If living with tuberous breasts is deflating your self-esteem and hindering your ability to lead a normal life, tuberous breast surgery may have a positive impact on your life. When performed by a skillful doctor using the right technique(s), the procedure can give you the symmetrical, shapely breasts you’ve always desired.
