Is There an Ideal Age for a Breast Lift?

Are you concerned that your breasts have lost their firm, lifted appearance and are starting to sag? A breast lift (mastopexy) can get them looking youthful and perky once again. Sagging breasts may be due to a variety of factors, but a breast lift can restore the desired shape and fullness. Many women may wonder: Is there an ideal age for a breast lift? Or can the procedure be done at any age?

Why Your Breasts Sag

Sagging breasts are often the result of the effects of pregnancy and breast feeding, but they may also be caused by the natural consequence of aging. As you age, the skin loses elasticity as collagen levels decline, and this leaves the breasts deflated. Extreme weight loss can also cause the breasts to sag.

How a Breast Lift Can Help

Many women with droopy breasts experience low self-esteem and lack confidence, and that’s why they often turn to mastopexy to correct the problem. A breast lift is a surgical procedure that is done to rejuvenate the breasts, and elevate their position on the chest wall. The procedure will also correct asymmetry, and raise nipples that are pointing downward.

Breast Lift Surgery

A breast lift involves removing the loose skin from the breast, and reshaping the breast tissue. The nipple-areola area is also re-positioned, and may be reduced in size if it has become enlarged due to age or pregnancy.

A breast lift is done under general anesthesia at an outpatient facility. The procedure generally takes about 1-3 hours to complete.

There are different techniques that can be used to perform a breast lift, and the method selected will depend on each woman’s unique concerns.

The anchor lift is the most common technique, as it offers the greatest amount of lift. The incisions for the anchor lift are made around the areola, and extend vertically down the breast, and horizontally along the inframammary fold. Other breast lift techniques include the ‘lollipop lift’, ‘donut lift’, and the ‘crescent lift.’

So, Is There an Ideal Age for a Breast Lift?

There is no ideal age for a breast lift, but surgery should not be done if your breasts are still developing. It is best to wait until all the changes have taken place. Doctors advise against having any type of breast correction done until the breasts have stabilized.

However, it’s important to realize that everyone develops at a different rate. Some teenage girls have fully developed breasts by the age of 16 or 17, while there are women who continue to experience changes well into their 20s. Therefore it is always advisable to consult with a board certified plastic surgeon to verify if you would be a good candidate for mastopexy.]

Although sagging breasts is a problem that is very common in women after childbirth, there are also women that develop droopy breasts at a very early age. Once the breasts are stabilized, it’s possible that a women as young as 18 years could be a good candidate for breast lift surgery, as long as she meets the other requirements.

A breast lift can be performed on women of all ages, but there are risks associated with surgery at any age. Older women over the age of 50 years can also undergo a breast lift as long as they are healthy, and do not have any existing medical problems.

Regardless of age, women should always be aware of the possible effects that a breast lift will have on their ability to breast feed, as well as on nipple sensation.

When considering the appropriateness of breast lift surgery, doctors evaluate the condition of the breasts rather than the age of the candidate. Mastopexy candidates should also be at a stable weight, because the shape and volume of the breasts will change if there is significant weight gain or weight loss. Clients considering breast lift should also be in good overall health.
