How Long is the Recovery From a Brazilian Butt Lift?

The recovery period for a Brazilian butt lift procedure ranges from 10 to 14 days.

– Dr. Ozan Sozer, Board Certified Plastic Surgeon

If you are unhappy with the size and shape of your buttocks, the Brazilian butt lift — sometimes shortened as “BBL” — is a natural way to give it the contours and projection you desire. The Brazilian butt lift is now very much in vogue, mostly thanks to heightened media coverage of celebrities with “big butts.”

The procedure was pioneered by a Brazilian plastic surgeon named Dr. Ivo Pitanguy, a surgeon who performed procedures on “the rich, famous, and royal,” according to his New York Times obituary that was published shortly after he passed away at the age of 93 in August of 2016.

What is a Brazilian butt lift?

The Brazilian butt lift is a natural augmentation technique that uses fat from your own body to enhance your buttocks.

The process itself is known as fat transfer, and it is done by taking fat from an area of the body that you’d rather not have it, and transferring it to a desirable location, which is the buttocks in this case. The Brazilian butt lift is a very effect way to make the buttocks fuller and firmer.

What’s involved?

The Brazilian butt lift is an outpatient procedure that takes between 1½ to 4 hours to perform. The duration of the surgery varies, depending on the extent of the liposuction and fat transfer required.

The fat needed for the procedure is harvested via liposuction from one or several areas of the body where there is excess fat. The most common donor areas are the abdomen, flanks, love handles, and thighs.

The fat is harvested using a liposuction procedure. This is carefully done using a cannula, to ensure optimal survival of the fat cells. The extracted fat is then processed and purified, before being injected into specific areas of the buttocks, to create feminine contours.

How long does it take to recover from a Brazilian butt lift?

The recovery period for a Brazilian butt lift procedure ranges from 10 to 14 days. Patients are advised to strictly follow the post-operative care and recovery instructions provided by their plastic surgeon — doing so will help you achieve a healthy recovery, and may speed up the recovery process.

After surgery, you can expect some temporary swelling, bruising, numbness, and soreness. Sometimes, pain medication is prescribed to ease the general discomfort that some patients can experience.

A compression garment has to be worn for at least 7-14 days to help minimize swelling, and also to prevent the build-up of pockets of fluid. The compression garment also helps to shape the areas from which fat was harvested. The garment should be worn at all times, but can be removed for taking a shower.

Patients are advised to have someone drive them home after surgery, and should get plenty of rest for the first 2 days. However, walking is encouraged as it will help to reduce swelling and prevent the formation of clots, but strenuous exercise should not be resumed for at least 4 weeks. Driving should also be postponed for several weeks.

Prolonged sitting and lying directly on the buttocks should also be avoided for at least three weeks after surgery. This is necessary in order to ensure that the fat cells get the best possible chance of survival. Not all of the transferred fat cells will survive, because when they are first relocated they don’t have their own blood supply, and it takes several weeks to get this re-established. Therefore, sitting for long periods too quickly after surgery can reduce the flow of blood to the area, and in turn, cause injury to the buttocks.

Are you a good candidate for a BBL?

A good candidate for a Brazilian butt lift should have enough fat in the right locations, which can be harvested to perform the procedure. Candidates for the procedure should also be healthy, have reasonably good skin tone, and have realistic expectations about surgery.

The Brazilian butt lift is generally a very safe procedure, but it must be done by a board certified plastic surgeon with the necessary training and experience. It’s also a good idea to ask the surgeon to view some before and after photos of previous patients. The procedure is a great way to augment your buttocks, and it also has the added benefit of sculpting other areas as well.
