Dr. Michael L. Berman graduated from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1996, completing his Internship and Residency at Banner University Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona. He is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Wound Management. He has been living in Scottsdale, Arizona for over 30 years relocating from the East coast in 1982. He enjoyed attending both High School and College in Arizona.
He worked as a Hospitalist for nearly a decade, and was the Medical Director of a large hospitalist group in addition to a Long-term acute care hospital. While a Hospitalists, Dr. Berman treated many patients with all types of wounds. It was a challenge finding qualified physicians to help attend to these patients, and thus he needed to learn to care for these difficult medical problems. It was this experience that drove Dr. Berman’s interest in wound medicine.
When Dr. Berman started his decade long journey into wound management, there were very few wound management physicians and established wound care clinics. As a result Dr. Berman made the decision to refocus his practice to the care of the wounded patient.
Dr. Berman is a pioneer in the field. He opened up his own wound management practice, Valley Wound Care Specialists, in 2006 and serves as the Medical Director of the Abrazo Arrowhead Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center. He was responsible for the development of this center which has now become a Center of Distinction and Excellence. His style of medicine and approach to wounds is aggressive and focused on positive patient outcomes and the ability to heal the patient as safely and as quickly as possible. He follows best practices and Evidence Based Medicine. He performs biologic skin substitution, skin grafts, full thickness debridement, negative pressure devices, specialized wrappings and dressings. He uses innovative and cutting edge technology and medical products like Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy.
Having a vast internal medicine background, Dr. Berman is able to “Treat the whole patient, not just the hole in the patient.” He has a passion for autoimmune and hypercoagulation defects associated with wounds. His wound healing success is unparalleled in his field and he is one of the most respected physicians around.
When he is not healing wounds, he spends time with his wife and their two girls. He is an avid car enthusiast and technology connoisseur.
The specialty of internal medicine is an area of primary care for adults. Dr. Berman specializes in diagnosing and treating cross-system illnesses that may affect multiple organ systems. When necessary, Dr. Berman also can refer patients to specialist physicians when medically needed. For instance, patients with severe kidney problems can be referred to a nephrologist for further medical tests or treatments.
