L. Erik Westerlund, MD, FACS specializes in spine surgery with an emphasis on complex and minimally invasive spine surgery techniques. He is board-certified in orthopedic surgery and he is fellowship-trained in orthopedic and neurosurgical spine surgery. His clinical practice has been focused exclusively on complex spine surgery since 2003. He is accepting new patients.
He has particular interest in the treatment of neck disorders, cervical spine stenosis, cervical disc hernation, spinal nerve compression, lumbar spinal stenosis, lumbar nerve compression, advanced revision spinal surgery, spinal tumors, and other surgical spinal disorders.
Dr. Westerlund graduated from The University of Virginia with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biological Sciences in Charlottesville, VA, and he earned his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC. He completed specialty training at the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center where he completed a general surgery internship as well as a formal post-doctoral research fellowship in Applied Orthopedic Biomechanics. He completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center in Charlottesville, VA. To receive his sub-specialty certificate in spine surgery, Dr. Westerlund trained in both orthpedic and neursurgical spine surgery at the Thomas Jefferson University Medical Center and Rothman Institute in Philadelphia.
Dr. Westerlund is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and the North American Spine Society. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the Georgia Orthopedic Society and Southern Orthopedic Association.
Dr. Westerlund has published extensively in scientific journals and he has published numerous textbook chapters. He continues to research spinal disease and advanced biomaterials at the Hughston Clinic Foundation and to teach and present his findings at national and international meetings.
Dr. Westerlund is an orthopedic surgeon in Georgia, trained to treat and diagnose all forms of injury to your musculoskeletal system, including the joints, muscles, bones, tendons, and ligaments.
